The Ultimate Smart Casual Guide
In a nutshell, smart casual is a mix of formal and casual—just a step down from business casual. The best part? It gives you more flexibility to wear polos, which happen to be my favorite piece of clothing.
As I was doing my research for this article, I found that “smart casual” could be more “casual” than I initially thought, especially in the summer. You can pair polos or oxford shirts with shorts, and that may be smart casual if you do it right.
However, for this article we’re sticking to chinos and polos.
What items to avoid with smart casual?
1. Jeans (A Controversial One)
Let’s start with a hot take: jeans are generally too casual for smart casual. While some outfits can make them work, chinos are a safer and more comfortable option.
2. T-Shirts and Casual Shirts
Avoid t-shirts entirely—stick to collared shirts like polos or dress shirts. Be mindful of twilled patterns or overly casual collared shirts, as they can look too relaxed. I usually stick to solid-colored polos or classic dress shirts.
3. Anything Too Formal
Steer clear of:
- Ties
- Silk dress shirts
- Suits (Blazers are okay, though)
- Dress pants
4. Footwear That’s Too Sporty or Too Formal
If you’re going for sneakers, keep it safe with white leather sneakers—they’re a solid, versatile choice. Leather loafers or derbies also work well. For winter, chukkas or Chelsea boots are great options.
Six Smart Casual Outfits Built for You
I put together six outfits using just three versatile polos and two pairs of pants. Thanks to the way they mix and match, they could also be considered minimalist outfits—perfect for guys who want to keep it simple yet stylish.
You’ll find links to either the item on the image or a very similar one from Amazon.

Outfit 1: Sunday Brunch Smart Casual
I wore this to a Sunday brunch, and looking back, khaki pants and white leather sneakers might have been a better choice for the occasion. However, for an everyday smart casual outfit, this look is a textbook example of the style. The pants are comfortable, and the polo is clean and breathable, perfect for the hot climate I live in.
One thing to note—I went with black Coach sneakers, which, to be honest, push the boundaries of smart casual a bit.
I couldn’t find the exact shirt I’m wearing here, but I found a great alternative from Amazon Essentials. As for the pants, since you’ll likely be wearing them often, I recommend investing in quality ones. Below, you’ll find a link to Docker’s navy pants on Amazon.
Outfit 2: Spring Smart Casual
This photo was taken at the gym, and I’m wearing a grayish-green polo from Old Navy, paired with navy pants and white sneakers. This is yet another textbook example of smart casual.
The green polo is perfect for spring, and it happens to be a popular color this year. I couldn’t find the exact one from Old Navy, but I found a similar option from Nautica, which I’ll actually be picking up myself.
You can pair it with the same Docker’s navy pants for a clean, versatile look.

Outfit 3: Refined & Relaxed

This picture was taken by my sister during a visit to a museum. The navy polo from H&M is super comfortable and breathable. I paired it with khaki pants from H&M and white Cole Haan sneakers. Considering how sunny it was, this outfit is a textbook example of smart casual for a warm day.
Outfit 4: Crisp & Clean

We’re bringing back the Amazon Essentials white polo and pairing it with GAP khaki pants and Cole Haan sneakers—a go-to outfit for the sunniest days.

Outfit 5: Preppy Smart Casual

After taking a closer look, I realized this outfit has a preppy feel while still staying within the boundaries of smart casual. You can recreate it with a 100% cotton Nautica shirt, GAP khaki pants, and, once again, your everyday Cole Haan sneakers.

Outfit 6: Bold but Balanced

This is definitely the boldest of the six outfits. With this combination, you’ll look comfortable, sharp, and just formal enough for everyday life—as long as you don’t work at a bank.
