How to Build a Versatile Wardrobe with 6 Classic Polos
As I started building my wardrobe with more intention, I noticed that I kept buying the same colors over and over when it came to polo shirts. The reality is that most men want clothing that’s durable, fits well, feels comfortable, and can be styled in multiple ways. That’s exactly why polo shirts are a staple, they check all those boxes.
The polos I’m recommending here are solid colors that can be worn casually, for business casual, or even smart casual looks. To achieve this versatility, go for pique cotton polos and avoid jersey polos. Also, stick to polos without big logos or flashy designs. The goal is to have pieces you can dress up or down as needed.
Let’s dive into the polos I consider essential in my wardrobe.

1. White Polo: The Classic Must-Have

A plain white polo is one of the most versatile pieces in my closet. The neutral color makes it easy to style in countless ways, and it’s perfect for warm weather since white reflects sunlight. The only downside? You have to be extra careful to keep it clean since white stains easily.
The one I’m wearing here is a Tommy Hilfiger slim fit polo. I styled it with a pair of Perry Ellis black trousers, and Cole Haan black loafers.
2. Khaki Polo: Neutral and Business Casual

Right now, this is my favorite polo! Beige is a neutral shade that works effortlessly with different outfits. Since I’m building an interchangeable wardrobe, I focus on colors like this to maximize my outfit options for different occasions.
In this photo, I was at a sushi restaurant with my best friend . Earlier that day, I had paired it with shorts, but for dinner, I just swapped in some dressier pants, and suddenly, I had a night-out look.
This polo was a gift from my dad, and it’s from U.S. Polo Assn.. I also found a similar one on Amazon. I’m not 100% sure exactly what tone this is, but you can select other tones on Amazon:
3. Green Polo: A Daily Essential

An olive green polo in a muted tone is a great addition to an interchangeable wardrobe. Since I work from home in a hot climate, I usually wear it with shorts, but if I need to step out, I can throw on some pants and sneakers or dress shoes—and I’m ready in five minutes.
In the photo, I’m wearing an olive Nautica polo, denim from Old Navy, and white Cole Haan sneakers.
4. Textured Polo

A textured polo like this one from H&M adds a playful and elevated look to your outfit. You can style this up or down depending on your necessities. I wore the one on the photo to the beach.
The one I’m wearing on the photo is a slim-fit rib-knit polo shirt and I styled it with a comfortable pair of Cole Haan white sneakers.
5. Navy Polo: The Most Essential Polo

If you ask stylists, they’ll tell you a navy polo is the most essential polo in any wardrobe. The moment I heard that, I went out and bought one, only to make the mistake of choosing a jersey polo. I learned from my mistake and bought a pique navy polo from H&M on my last trip to Miami.
In this photo I’m styling it with khaki pants from H&M and white Cole Haan sneakers.
6. Red Polo: For When You Want to Stand Out

A red polo is bold. You have to be strategic when wearing it because this color demands attention. The one in this photo is not a muted shade at all, so I make sure to pair it with neutral pieces to balance out the look.
This polo is from U.S. Polo Assn., but I wouldn’t recommend this exact one because it only looks good tucked in. Since red isn’t for everyone, I suggest trying it on in-store before buying to see how it works with your skin tone and personal style.
