Smart Casual: Loafers and Jeans + Outfit Ideas

by Roger Saenz PUBLISHED:

Loafers and jeans are right now one of my favorite styles. It’s also trending all over Instagram and Tik Tok. With the right pair of jeans you can balance the proportions of the outfit and look much better.

Is this smart casual?

That will still depend on the top of the outfit and what pair of jeans you are styling the outfit with. Even if you are using loafers if you decide to combine it with a graphic tee and ripped skinny jeans then there’s not much of a balance in the outfit, so do keep that in mind.

How I’m styling loafers and jeans for a smart casual look?

The way I do it is use my versatile dark wash Old Navy jeans.

This is the exact pair of Old Navy dark wash denim that you’ll be seeing across all my outfits today.

Jeans checklist for a smart casual look:

  1. Dark Colors: Either dark wash like mine or a similar indigo color.
  2. Fit: Mine are athletic fit, but that’s as tight as they should get, a safe option is a straight or regular fit. They shouldn’t be baggy at all either.
  3. No ripped jeans.

What loafers should you use?

Black or brown are a safe option. There are many types of classic loafers that will work for this style, so I won’t start talking about them, since I think most loafers will work, unless you go for something wild like a white pair of loafers with patterns.

I’m using this black pair of classic loafers by Cole Haan. What I love about them is they are elegant, while also being Cole Hann level comfortable.

What about the top of the outfit?

In my opinion, the top of the outfit should also be “smart” to keep the balance since I usually strive for the jeans to be 2/3 of the outfit, so to balance formality and proportions I use either a pique solid color polo shirt or a dress shirt in either a solid color or with minimal patterns like pinstripes.

Smart Casual Loafers and Jeans Outfit Ideas

Enough theory for today let’s get to the practical part of today’s lesson.

Look 1: Smart Casual Chic Outfit

A person in a white polo and jeans stands on sunlit steps, gazing thoughtfully to the side. Wooden chairs and greenery are visible in the background.

The reason I called this “smart casual chic” is for how elegant this outfit looks with just classic timeless pieces that you probably already have in your wardrobe. I think the secret sauce of this outfit is the fit of every piece. The polo is small in size S slim fit.

Look 2: Red Polo Shirt Outfit

A man in a red shirt uses a blue public payphone marked "TeleCard" on a sunny street, with buildings in the background.

A red polo shirt can be a great addition to your wardrobe for days when you want to add more sauce and variety to your outfit. It’s an underrepresented color in menswear and can instantly elevate your outfit when used correctly. The one I’m wearing from Nautica is just $20 and made of 100% cotton, which is perfect for a polo shirt I don’t use often, but that looks good with a great fit.

Look 3: Pinstripe Shirt Summer Outfit

Person wearing a black hat, light blue striped shirt, and dark jeans stands against a plain backdrop. Casual, stylish vibe with classic loafers.

Pinstripes are a 2025 trend that I’m totally planning to take advantage of. They are nice patterns that can add variety to an outfit in a subtle way.

Look 4: Essential Navy Polo Shirt Outfit

Young man in a navy polo and jeans stands confidently on outdoor steps against a clear sky, hands in pockets, exuding a casual, relaxed vibe.

I hope most of my readers have a navy polo shirt in their closet, it’s one of the most essential items in menswear. Personally, it’s hard for me to style it because I’m a high-contrast guy who needs colors in his outfit to avoid being washed-out, combine that with the fact that I”m 5’9 and I look short when the bottom of the outfit is lighter than the top. This essentially means that with a color that’s as dark as navy I would need a much darker color(usually black) to look good.

The navy polo is from H&M and is one of the few items that I’ve found from the brand that’s 100% cotton.

Look 5: Light Blue Polo Shirt Outfit

A person stands on a paved path, wearing a light blue polo, jeans, and black loafers. The background features trees and a yellow building under a clear sky, conveying a calm, contemplative mood.

This polo shirt is my go to color when I’ve used my white polo shirt too often. Light blue is a neutral color that’s much easier to style than navy for me. If you are a high contrast guy(black hair and light skin tone) then light blue can be your “navy”. The polo that I’m wearing is from Boss and it’s made of 100% pima cotton, the fit is off the rack, and the only issue with it is that it wrinkles easily.

Look 6: Styling timeless classics

Young man in glasses, white shirt, and dark cardigan stands confidently outdoors. He wears blue jeans and black shoes, hands in pockets. Sunny day.

This outfit is one you can probably wear in 1984, 2025 and 2075 and still look good and appear normal. It’s build with timeless classic items that have been around for decades. The white dress shirt that I’m wearing is from Nautica and it’s an item from the brand that I don’t recommend you buy, it’s made of 100% polyester, and you can probably see that if you take a closer look at the shirt.

Look 7: Black Polo Shirt Outfit

A man in sunglasses stands on a sunlit sidewalk, wearing a black polo shirt, blue jeans, and loafers. Behind him are trees and a stone wall.

This was my first time styling a black polo for the blog and it ended up better than I thought. If you look closely this is a jersey polo shirt, that means it should only be styled for casual occasions, it makes the whole outfit lean more into “casual” than “smart”, the advantage with it is the color “black” is a more formal and elegant color.

The polo shirt is from DKNY again it’s a jersey polo so you have to be careful with it, it looks good and it’s made of 95% cotton and 5% spandex, I think this is the oldest polo shirt in my closet, even though I’m not a fan of jersey polos the quality of this one is simply unmatched.

Can any of these outfits be business casual?

“Business Casual” is a broad term that encompasses a lot of different things, from sports jackets to a polo shirt. Personally, I do go against jeans for a business casual look, and even for smart casual ones(I consider pants to be more comfortable). However, if your boss allows jeans at the office then go for it.

I have an article with business casual outfits with polo shirts that can help you get some ideas that are more “appropriate”.
