by Roger Saenz UPDATED:

Loafers are a classic dress shoe that have become trendy in recent years, thanks to social media. They’re arguably the most versatile shoe, which often leads to confusion about how to wear them. With that in mind, my goal today is to give you 10 men’s loafers outfit ideas. I’ll also explain how to style loafers for several different dress codes.

Wear a Functional Fleece

An outfit with a gray fleece, white dress shirt, jeans and black loafers.

A white dress shirt and medium-wash jeans are a base you can mix with almost anything in your closet. A functional fleece like the one I’m wearing from Thumb United just happens to be one of those items.

I prefer to button my dress shirt all the way up to create a straight collar that balances the proportions of my wider face.

Gray Crewneck Sweater + Cream Chinos + Black Loafers

A gray sweater is slowly becoming a fall must-have for every office guy. You can style it with a pair of cream chinos and a classic pair of leather loafers for an easy outfit that will keep you warm during the colder fall days.

Green Cotton Sweater + Gray Wool Pants + Black Loafers

This green sweater is my favorite item so far for this fall season. I can pair it with a pair of gray wool pants and black leather loafers for a comfortable and smart outfit.

Casual Summer Outfit

A red polo is not the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. It’s often difficult to style, but when you are using a dark indigo pair of jeans with black loafers there’s a high chance you can pull off almost any top.

Smart Casual Outfit

This is a simple outfit that perfectly balances the smart casual style and shows that, many times in fashion, less is more. The outfit is again using a polo shirt. After styling loafers with a red polo, it’s safe to say you can style them with almost any solid-colored polo shirt.

Business Casual

Loafers are a great match for the business casual style. That’s the reason I included them in my business casual capsule wardrobe. If you have the right pair of loafers, you can wear them with almost any office outfit.

This outfit is widely known as a business casual uniform. I’m using the same pair of black loafers as before, but now with navy pants and an Oxford shirt.

Summer Business Casual

The long name of the outfit explains how this is the perfect summer alternative to the business casual uniform of a long-sleeve light blue dress shirt, navy pants, and black loafers. The shirt is from Hugo Boss, and it’s made of 100% Pima cotton.

My experience building so many men’s loafers outfits at this point tells me that you don’t need to wear the most comfortable shoes in the summer. There’s a low chance you’ll be walking a lot. However, loafers can still be a comfortable option—especially the pair from Cole Haan I included below.

Tan Loafers Outfit

We’re switching to my very first pair of loafers. This is one of the oldest photos on the blog, and I wore this outfit to a sushi date. The tan loafers were a great match with a black pair of pants, which was actually a surprise for me.

I actually believe a dark brown pair of loafers is even more versatile than a black pair, but that’s a theory I still need to prove.

Light-Wash Jeans

Man in a striped button-down shirt, light wash jeans, and black loafers using a public phone.

We’re bringing back the black loafers to show you how to style them with a light-wash pair of jeans. Even though there’s a strong color contrast, and light-wash jeans are less versatile and more casual, I think the outfit works.

Just make sure you either wear socks or no-show socks that don’t display a brand logo.

Casual Work Outfit

So far, we’ve styled loafers with two Oxford shirts and four different polo shirts. This outfit proves that you can style them with the most formal version of a dress shirt. A poplin shirt is often difficult to style due to its level of formality. I took it a step further and wore it with jeans.

Early Fall Outfit

I’ve found that one of the easiest ways to style loafers for a business casual look is with navy pants. They’re one of the most versatile options, and when you wear them with black loafers, there’s a good chance almost any dress shirt will look great.

Cuff the Pants

Olive is a neutral color that’s not used enough in menswear. It looks great on almost any guy and can be mixed and matched with many different items.

If you’re bold enough to let everyone know you love your loafers, then cuffing the pants is a valid option.

Friday Office Outfit

One of my favorite uses for loafers is elevating the formality of an outfit to either smart or business casual. They help me put together a proper office outfit on Fridays when I work from home.

How to Style Loafers

You just saw  ten men’s loafers outfit ideas styled with five different dress shirts—ranging from an olive green overshirt to a super formal poplin shirt. I also wore them with four different polo shirts (even a red one). I styled two pairs of pants, including one outfit with tan loafers and black pants. Finally, I featured two pairs of jeans, one of which was a very casual light-wash pair.

Some outfits were better than others, and some didn’t totally convince me—but it’s safe to say loafers work with almost anything.

What to Avoid When Wearing Loafers

From my own experience, my only recommendation will be to be careful with tee shirts, and especially avoid graphic tees. Honestly, I’ve seen creators matching t-shirts and loafers, but I haven’t been able to pull that one off.

My entire wardrobe is pretty interchangeable—as you can see, I can match almost any top I have with almost any pair of pants and my loafers. I avoid any piece I know will be difficult to match with the rest of my wardrobe. That way, I make my life easier when styling outfits and ensure I’m investing in high-quality pieces.

How to Wear Loafers With Anything in Your Wardrobe

My solution for you is to build a capsule wardrobe. Mine happens to be a business casual capsule wardrobe, but you can easily build yours with just 15 or so items that all match each other—and loafers are a great addition to any capsule wardrobe.

Finally, you can also take inspiration from the outfits above. Most of the items are versatile and would be a great fit for a capsule wardrobe—except for the red polo shirt, light-wash jeans, and maybe the plaid dress shirt. Aside from those pieces, the rest are pretty safe.
