2025 Fall and Winter Business Casual Capsule Wardrobe With Outfit Ideas
Fall and winter are slowly becoming my favorite seasons. You can create so many outfit combinations with just a few pieces, thanks to the magic of layering.
My goal with this business casual capsule wardrobe is to show you exactly that — which pieces you can use and how you can layer them.
I’ve narrowed it down to 20 pieces, and as a quick note, I do own the majority of the items I’m recommending here.

White Dress Shirt

A proper white dress shirt is an essential item, even if it’s not my favorite item of all. The two that I own are performance wrinkle dress shirts, which honestly have saved me a couple of times already.
WARNING: White dress shirts can be a little see-through, so I recommend wearing a white undershirt. It can also serve as a layering piece for more casual outfits.
Colder climate alternative: If you live in a colder climate or when temperatures start dropping below below 60°F (15°C), a twill shirt is a much better option.
how to style a white dress shirt
If you decide to go for one of the dress shirts below—especially the Nautica one I’m wearing in both images—based on my experience, it’s quite difficult to make it look good on its own.
Proper white dress shirts are meant to be worn under a jacket, so if you rarely wear a suit and are just starting out, a white oxford shirt is a much better option.

Here’s a picture of me trying to pull off an outfit with a white dress shirt—you can see, first, that it’s see-through, and second, that it just doesn’t work.
Light-Blue Oxford Shirt
A light-blue Oxford shirt has been my Swiss Army Knife since becoming a content creator. I started out with an old Van Heusen dress shirt, but this past month I finally got my dream Oxford from J.Crew, a broken-in organic cotton shirt.
Now, let’s discuss how versatile this shirt can be.

You can wear it for a Sunday brunch.

I also consider this shirt the ideal one for pulling off a business casual look with jeans.
By this point, I’ve hopefully shown you how versatile this shirt can be. And if you don’t have one yet, the J.Crew Oxford is the one I recently bought.
If it’s a little too expensive for you, this one from Quince is also made of 100% organic cotton and costs just $40 with free shipping.
Note: Fall is a season when you can comfortably wear a sweater as your first layer, which is why I’m including them as tops.
Green Cotton Crewneck Sweater
One of the reasons I love green—especially dark and olive shades—is because, in my opinion, it’s a color that looks good on everyone, and I’ve been seeing it a lot this year.

During fall, this can be your first visible layer. Always wear a shirt underneath—even a basic tee—to help extend the life of your sweater.
Cashmere or Wool Sweater
As it starts getting colder, you may want to go for a cashmere or wool sweater that provides more warmth. The one you choose will depend on your style and office dress code.

If your office dress code leans more conservative, a gray crewneck sweater is a safe option to keep you warm during the fall. You can easily take it off if they turn up the heat.

If your office dress code is more relaxed, something fun like a cable-knit sweater is a great option. I was able to elevate the look to proper business casual with my workhorse light-blue Oxford shirt, navy wool trousers, and black loafers.
If you are interested in any of the sweaters above, here they are. 👇
Navy Zip-Up Cardigan
If I had to recommend another piece on the same level as a light-blue Oxford shirt, it would be this one. A navy zip-up cardigan has been the second most versatile item in my wardrobe this year.
There are so many ways to style it, so let’s start with a few examples.

You can zip it all the way up on colder days and pair it with wool pants and black shoes for a business outfit that’s both elegant and warm.

The navy sweater adds a slightly more formal touch that can help elevate any outfit—like this one, where I’m wearing jeans to the office.

Here I’m wearing a $10 tee, and you can see how the navy cardigan instantly elevates the top half of the outfit.
Careful on which one you get: Depending on where you live, and since this would probably be one of your workhorses, make sure you choose the fabric that best suits your climate.
In my case, cotton was a better option, but for you, it might be wool or cashmere. I’m planning to get the SuitSupply one next year.
Note on the one I’m wearing: I got mine at the beginning of Spring and it was listed as “navy baseball cardigan” before it sold out. They brought it back this month with a different name, but it’s the same thing. They also included some new colors.
That’s a common thing brands do to make us think something is new or different when they are bringing back an item that sold out.
Tees
We’ll be using the tees mostly as undershirts and for layering.
I’ve been getting all my tees from GAP factory and they are $10 right now. I’ve had so many bad experiences with t-shirts over the years, but so far, these have been the only ones that really work for me.
I’m currently shopping around for merino wool t-shirts for late fall and winter. I think I’ll go for these ones from Quince.
Pants
After taking thousands of pictures of myself in different outfits, I’m convinced that pants can make or break an outfit.
If you’re only going to have a couple of pairs, make sure they work with everything in your wardrobe.
Jeans
Can you wear business casual with jeans?
That’s a common question. The style allows jeans because it’s all about finding balance.
My simple formula for business casual with jeans:
Solid dress shirt + business casual jeans + proper dress shoes.

Something I’ve found that does wonders for me is adding a jacket, blazer, or sweater that’s “business” enough to elevate the outfit.
What jeans should you buy?
I wrote a whole blog post on the best business casual jeans.
In a nutshell, you should look for a solid medium- or dark-wash pair with no holes or flashy details — avoid heavy contrast stitching and overly designed pockets.
One thing I do is save money on jeans so I can invest more in trousers. I’ve found that $35 jeans work just as well for me as pricier pairs.

The pair I’m wearing in this picture is a $35 one from Old Navy. They offer lots of different fits and sizes, which is the main reason I went with them in the first place.
You can find more options oi my business casual jeans post, but if you’re interested in the $35 pair I’m wearing, check below. 👇
Beige Chinos
The contrast between the darker pants men usually wear and beige chinos is so strong that it feels like a completely different outfit just by changing the pants.

This is almost the exact same outfit side by side, but with a different pair of pants.
They are also perfect for the daytime. The ones I’m wearing on the picture are from H&M, and they are $30 right now.
I recently ordered a pair of 770 chinos from J. Crew, so I’ll probably be wearing those as my pair of beige chinos. They are known as the “holy grail” of chinos, but if you’re on a budget or it’s your first time buying a pair, the H&M ones should be enough.
Navy Trousers
I’ve found that a good pair of navy trousers can instantly elevate any outfit. They’re my go-to when I’m in a rush and need to rely on a fail-safe pair that I know looks good no matter what I’m wearing on top or which shoes I choose.

As you saw from my previous image they can elevate a basic $10 tee to a full smart casual outfit that looks put together and intentional.

Here, I’m actually wearing a military style shirt, which has a rugged texture and leans more casual. The navy trousers are able to balance out the look thanks to their more formal appearance.

The main reason why this last look is a safe business casual outfit is the trousers. You can barely see the Oxford shirt.
I own two pairs of navy trousers. In the first two images I’m wearing a cotton pair, and in the third one, with the crewneck sweater, I’m wearing a pair of pleated navy wool trousers.
I bought the cotton ones at a local store in my home country, but the pleated wool pair I got recently is from Banana Republic.
Gray Wool Trousers
Gray trousers can go with almost any color top I can think of.
I use them to tone down outfits all the time.

I recently changed my pair of gray chinos from H&M for a pair of wool trousers from Calvin Klein, they are more versatile and will hopefully help me elevate my outfits.
These four pair of pants should have you covered for all your office outfits and even your casual outfits, the only thing I will add to these may be a pair of light wash denim and you have all the pants you need for almost anything in life.
Footwear
This is probably the most difficult part of the outfit for many of us. You can easily swap a shirt or pants, but when it comes to footwear, it’s easy to default to the same pair of white sneakers.
For this capsule, I’ll keep it to three pairs.
Footwear is the only part of my wardrobe where I avoid going for low-cost options. You may see me wearing the same pair of shoes over and over again — and that’s a good sign of their quality and how much wear I’ve gotten out of them.
Black Loafers
When it comes to office style, I’ve found them as the perfect pair to elevate the formality of almost any outfit. Let’s recap some of the looks.

You can go full business (or at least my definition of it).

Loafers can help you elevate the formality of a casual shirt.

Loafers can easily make an outfit with jeans feel appropriate for the office.

Finally, black loafers can elevate two casual pieces like a polo shirt and jeans into a smart casual outfit.
I wrote a blog post with 10 loafers outfit ideas in case you need inspiration.
The ones I’ve been wearing throughout this post are from Cole Haan, and I love the horse bit detail. I also wrote a whole article about the best and most comfortable loafers I found online in terms of price-to-performance ratio.
White Sneakers
White sneakers are everyone’s favorite, and I know you guys love them. Everything I post related to office outfits with sneakers usually ends up being my most saved and engaged-with content.
Let’s take a quick look at some outfits.

When I’m styling office outfits with sneakers, I try to keep the rest of the look relatively “business”. That means no jeans. Just an Oxford or dress shirt paired with chinos or trousers.
My formula: Oxford or dress shirt + trousers or chinos + white sneakers.

For this last outfit, I’m wearing a casual shirt and sneakers, but it still feels office-friendly thanks to the chinos and the fact that both the cardigan and sneakers are relatively minimal.

This a casual outfit, but you can see how a pair of white sneakers fits almost anywhere, they are by far my most worn item.
I own the GrandPrø Topspin from Cole Haan, and it’s honestly a pair I couldn’t recommend enough. They’re well worth the $168 — comfortable, versatile, minimal, and my favorite item overall.
If you need a more affordable option, I’ve owned a great pair of white sneakers from H&M for almost two years now, and they’re just $35.
Brown Sneakers
Your third pair would usually be brown boots, but at this point, I know you guys so well — the thing you’ve asked for most is more outfits with different sneakers, and I listened!

I recently got myself a pair of brown Cole Haan GrandPrø Lux sneakers, and I’m working on getting some outfit pictures ready for the blog soon.
I challenged myself to wear them daily and mix them with almost everything in my wardrobe. I’ve found they add a certain flair that white sneakers just can’t match.
Jackets and Outwear
The sweaters I listed can keep you warm. If you go for the merino wool option from Suitsupply, that one can double down as a jacket.
You can add a lighter layer like a Harrington jacket or a trench coat, which will keep you warm and protected from the elements until around 45–55°F (7–13°C) — though that depends mostly on you.
This fall, I decided to buy both a Harrington jacket and a denim jacket, both made out of cotton, I’m including the Harrington jacket here.
Harrington Jacket
Add the Harrington jacket on top of a cardigan or a cashmere or wool sweater, and that may be enough for this fall depending on where you live or at least until mid-November.

The harrington jacket I went with is from J. Crew.
Wool Overcoat
Finally, since I know the majority of my audience lives in colder climates, I just bought this wool overcoat.
I did a lot of research before getting it, and honestly, I’m not used to spending this much on one item since I live in a subtropical climate (San Pedro Sula), but I know it’s essential for late fall and winter.

This is exactly the coat I’m talking about. It’s currently $179 and made of 80% Italian wool.
Quince says it can keep you comfortable down to about 6°F (–15°C), so it should be more than enough to keep you warm — unless you’re one of my three viewers from Quebec. 🤐

Here’s the first office outfit I styled with the coat, and I honestly love it. I can’t wait to travel to colder places to really take advantage of it.

Business Casual Outfit Ideas
Business Casual With Sneakers

If wearing sneakers to the office is your thing, then fall is the perfect season to wear them in brown.
Pair them with a gray crewneck sweater and navy wool trousers to elevate the formality of the outfit.
Green Sweater Outfit

Forest green is a color that looks good on almost any man. It’s a strong, masculine shade that’s perfect for fall.
Pair the sweater with an Oxford shirt, navy trousers and black loafers for a complete business casual outfit.
Fall Cardigan Outfit

As offices become more casual and suits become less common, a navy cardigan is a great alternative if you want a minimal layering piece that still looks like a suit jacket.
You can pair this with almost anything just check out my navy cardigan outfits post.
White Sneakers Work Outfit

White sneakers are one of the most versatile pairs of shoes in any wardrobe. A good minimal pair is a safe everyday option that has been around for years.
I’m pairing them with an Oxford shirt and chinos for that perfect business casual balance.
Preppy Office Outfit

The key to pulling off an office outfit with a cable-knit sweater and brown sneakers is to first wear a pair of navy trousers and second, accessorize correctly.
My glasses are working just as hard as the wool trousers to give this look an office vibe.
Business Casual With Jeans

Unless you work at J.P. Morgan, there’s a good chance you can get away with this one.
Even though I’m wearing a sweater cardigan and jeans, the key here is how each item looks and how you combine them.
First, the jeans are in a medium wash with no distress and fit me like a glove. Second the navy cardigan feels more formal because of it’s color.
Finally, I’m mixing in a few more formal pieces like the Oxford shirt, black loafers, and glasses.
Chinos Office Outfit

Chinos are a business casual essential. They sit right at the intersection between jeans and trousers and can be dressed up or down.
Here, I’m wearing them with black loafers and an Oxford shirt to balance out the sweater.
Tech Office Outfit

This is a smart casual outfit that’s great for more relaxed office dress codes. It’s comfortable and perfect for the fall season.
If you want to make this look more formal, just add the loafers and a dress shirt.
Friday Work Outfit

It’s Friday, and you want to wear your favorite pair of jeans and be ready for that special dinner or those after-work mocktails.
Where Should I Start With My Capsule Wardrobe?
My best advice is that before you start buying anything, take a close look at what you already own and see what will compliment it.
For example, if you have five Oxford shirts and two pairs of trousers, adding two more pairs of pants will double the number of outfits you can make with those shirts.
Before buying anything, I use Whering to style each item into at least three outfits using what I already have in my wardrobe.
Whering is an app that lets you build flat-lay outfits with the pieces you currently own.
It has been a game changer for me, and I hope it is for you too as you create your curated collection of clothing.
