1 Base 11 Smart Casual Outfits For Men

Four smart casual outfit ideas for men.
by Roger Saenz UPDATED:

Smart casual outfits are all about having items that can be mixed and matched with each other effortlessly.

Unfortunately, no one expects a man to take 45 minutes to get ready. The best we can do is carefully curate a wardrobe with core items like a light-blue Oxford shirt and stone chinos. They serve as a base and can be paired with almost anything we can think of.

What is Smart Casual?

In a nutshell, smart casual is about finding the balance between formal and casual pieces. You can use the popular 2 + 2 formula as a guideline.

2 formal items + 2 casual items = Smart Casual Outfit (most of the time)

An example of a smart casual outfit showing the 2 + 2 rule of formal and casual pieces.

This is a textbook example of smart casual style and the 2 + 2 outfit formula that combines formal and casual pieces.

Let’s look at another example. 👇

A smart casual outfit with a green sweater, navy trousers, and brown sneakers.

Smart casual is often considered one of the most confusing styles in men’s fashion because of how broad it is. It’s often difficult to know which pieces are formal and which ones are casual.

I’ll do a more extensive guide on this in the future.

Smart Casual Outfit Ideas For Men

Simple Base

A man wearing a raincoat blue Oxford shirt from J.Crew, stone chinos, and white sneakers.

This is the “base” we’ll be working with: a raincoat-blue Oxford shirt and stone chinos.

I’ll be adding sweaters, mixing jackets, changing shoes, and playing with accessories, but I’ll always be wearing the same raincoat blue Oxford shirt and stone chinos throughout the blog post.

Business Casual Outfit

A man wearing a gray crewneck sweater, stone chinos, and black loafers.

This is an example of how easily we can elevate the formality of an outfit with a proper pair of dress shoes.

The gray sweater works great when you want to keep the outfit toned down and more “office-friendly.”

Textbook Smart Casual Outfit

A man wearing a navy cardigan, light-blue Oxford shirt, stone chinos, and white sneakers

Just like the outfit from the first example, this is a textbook smart casual look. I’m balancing two formal and two casual pieces.

The glasses are always a nice touch that make outfits feel more “work-friendly.”

Finally, the navy cardigan due to its darker color is what I consider my modern version of a suit jacket.

Fall Office Outfit

A man wearing a green crewneck sweater, stone chinos, and brown sneakers.

We’re going full fall and keeping it office-friendly thanks to the Oxford shirt peeking out of the sweater and the stone business-casual chinos.

Since the green sweater isn’t quite “fall enough” for me, I also added brown sneakers.

The only thing missing is a pumpkin spice latte.

Denim Jacket Outfit

An outfit idea with a man wearing a denim jacket, blue oxford shirt, cream chinos, and white sneakers.

A denim jacket is often one of the trickiest items to style, but thanks to the versatile base, we can mix in almost anything and it won’t look out of place.

This look can be a casual work outfit or one you can wear to a coffee date.

Fall Old Money Outfit

A man wearing a cable-knit sweater, stone chinos, and brown sneakers.

A cable-knit sweater is a quick way to add a touch of preppy style to any outfit. I added the brown sneakers again to keep the fall theme.

This is a casual outfit you can wear for either a coffee or dinner date.

Easy Outfit Idea

A man wearing a gray crewneck sweater, stone chinos, and white sneakers.

If you need an easy outfit for running errands or a casual day, this look with a gray crewneck and white sneakers works great.

Since I’m wearing a solid base and a gray crewneck strikes a nice balance between “formal” and “casual,” this could even work as an office outfit—depending on how strict the dress code is.

Fall Business Outfit

A man wearing a green crewneck sweater, stone chinos and black loafers.

A business casual outfit is a careful balance of “business” and more “casual” pieces, just like smart casual, but with a higher level of formality.

To achieve a business casual look while wearing a green sweater, I added a black pair of loafers. The sunglasses are just a nice accessory for shooting outside.

Early Fall Office Outfit

A man wearing a navy cardigan, stone chinos, and black sneakers.

This navy zip cardigan has been my Swiss Army knife this year—I’ve been able to wear it in so many ways.

Black sneakers can be considered a “smarter” option than white since the color feels more formal. They’re perfect for offices with stricter dress codes.

Preppy Office Outfit

A man wearing a cable-knit sweater, stone chinos, and white sneakers.

We’re making the cable-knit sweater more “office-friendly” by adding white sneakers and glasses.

The glasses are actually real, and if you’re an office worker who spends long hours in front of a screen, you probably need some version of them—so why not use them as an accessory to elevate the formality of your outfit?

Jean Jacket Work Outfit

A man wearing a jeans jacket, Oxford shirt, stone chinos, and black sneakers.

This is one of those situations where a denim jacket comes in handy when you want to make the look more casual.

The Oxford shirt and chinos are more “business” pieces, while the sneakers add a “smart” touch.
