How to Wear Flannels To The Office + Outfit Ideas

How To Wear Flannels To The Office
by Roger Saenz UPDATED:

Flannel shirts quickly became one of my favorite items. I bought my first flannel this year and as someone who has been primarily doing business casual style I knew I had to find a way to sneak them into office looks, and I think I did!

So here you have my quick guide on how to wear flannels to the office for a business casual look and some outfit ideas.

How I’m Styling Flannels

How To Wear a Flannel To The Office
Darker colors can help you tone down the casualness of a flannel.

Flannels are casual shirts, some might say they are too casual for a business outfit, and that might as well be true. To make sure you avoid getting fired for wearing a flannel shirt to the office, here’s what you can do:

  1. Flannels tend to have a loose fit, to counter this you can you can either size down or wear a slightly fitted flannel. All the flannels I’m linking to below are slightly fitted.
  2. Tuck in the flannel and wear a belt that matches your shoes.
  3. Wear an appropriate pair of chinos or dress pants that can elevate the formality of the look.
  4. Go for flannels in neutral colors(gray, blues, dark green) and avoid patterns. If you decide to go with a pattern add a layer that elevates the formality of the look.
  5. Choose an appropriate pair of business casual shoes. They can make or break an outfit.

Black Office Style

Black is a great color to use when you need to tone down an outfit for the office. Here I’m going for an all-black look except for the flannel. Since we usually leave flannels for fall I’m pairing them with a black pair of boots.

Gray Chinos Business Casual

This is the outfit from the comparison picture above. Gray pants are probably the best way of helping an outfit become business casual. They are a menswear staple that go with almost everything. I’m pairing them with a minimal pair of black leather sneakers and a cardigan. If you wear a flannel like this one make sure to add a layer like a cardigan. Avoid a formal blazer.

Blue Flannel Outfit

This is a flannel in a lighter color, which tends to be more casual. I’m bringing back the all-black look one more time to pull this one off.

In the case of a darker color flannel like this one it’s a safer shirt to pair with beige pants. To avoid adding too much color I kept the rest of the outfit in Cognac.

For my final outfit I’m bringing back the blue flannel, but this time pairing it with gray pants for a look that feel completely different.
